Court case update from Nigeria

Another election and judicial update from Nigeria, reported by the New York Times.

Nigeria: Courts Throw Plans for Presidential Election Into Confusion

"The Court of Appeal in Abuja, the capital, ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission had the power to disqualify indicted candidates, including Atiku Abubakar, the opposition leader, vice president and candidate for president in the election, now just 17 days away. But hours later, the Federal High Court, also in the capital, ruled that Mr. Abubakar’s name must be put on the official ballot. His challenge to his indictment on corruption charges is to be heard by another court on April 29, after the April 21 election. If he wins that case, the results of the election might be nullified. The electoral commission’s lawyer, Joe Gadzama, said it would appeal the High Court’s ruling in favor of Mr. Abubakar, saying the commission wanted to “marry” the two decisions..."
